Choir Structure

Choir Victoria With Ron Barrassi

Levels

The Victorian Boys Choir and The Victorian Girls Choir normally rehearse seperately. Closer to concerts there may be combined rehearsals. They also perform at concerts seperately with one or two combined songs (usually finales).

There are three levels through which choristers progress through at their own pace before being promoted:

  • The Semplice level is the entry level to Choir Victoria. Here new choristers are introduced to basic choral music. They play musically oriented games and rehearse fun and easy music. They perform at all of Choir Victoria's concerts. Choristers in Semplice are normally promoted to the Intrada (intermediate) choir after one year.
  • The Intrada level is a place where choristers broaden their musical knowledge. They are split into two groups of altos and sopranos. They perform at all Choir Victoria concerts and attend camps.
  • After a year in the Intrada choir, the choristers can audition to be in the Cadenza Choir. Cadenza choir performs at all Choir Victoria concerts and also at invited public and private events. The Cadenza choir builds on the knowledge taught to choristers in the Intrada Choir. They can sing music that is up to six parts and sometimes sing music in other languages. As part of the Cadenza choir, there is a compulsory weekend camp twice a year where the choristers have intense rehearsals. This choir is conducted by the Director of Music. As part of being the performing choir, Cadenza choristers are expected to attend no less than 80% of scheduled rehearsals for the semester.

Promotion within the Victorian Boys Choir and The Victorian Girls Choir is by merit based on:

  • vocal ability
  • commitment
  • maturity

Uniforms

In belonging to any formal group, uniform can present a significant cost. At Choir Victoria we aim to keep all aspects of being a Choir member as low as possible. Rehearsal uniform must be purchased either new or second hand (if available) . All Performing Uniform, such as vests, pants, skirts, and robes are provided on a loan basis from the choirs wardrobe.
